N.W.A — 搶走東岸風采的強勁團體

1988年可說是饒舌的黃金年代，有很多的饒舌歌手和團體在這一年推出新專輯，舉凡Public Eneny、Ice-T、MC Lyte、Big Daddy Kane、Eric B. & Rakim、Biz Markie、DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince、Slick Rick、the Jungle Brothers、Run DMC、Boogie Down Production、EPMD等等，太多了根本舉例不完。

但是比起上述那些饒舌歌手和團體，有一個團體更受矚目、更具爭議性，沒錯那就是來自加州康普頓、以Gandsta Rap聞名的N.W.A.（Niggaz With Attitude）。最主要的成員有Ice Cube、Eazy-E、MC Ren、DJ Yella和Dr Dre。雖然Eazy-E是N.W.A.的老大，但是唱得最好的不是他，而是Ice Cube。Ice Cube在Straight Outta Comptom負責唱第一段，是最好的一段。除此之外，他更擅長寫詞，功力也是整團最厲害的。

他們是第一個美國政府想要忽視，甚至嘗試要阻止的饒舌團體，因為他們的音樂充滿著毒品、暴力，還有像是曾被美國FBI抗議、要求下架的"Fuck The Police"。但N.W.A.認為，他們只不過是把黑人貧民窟的窮困生活用饒舌唱出來，想要讓全美國知道他們艱困的處境而已。

Straight Outta Comptom雖然不是第一首Gangsta Rap，但卻讓Gangsta Rap風靡全美國。Ice-T從東岸的Schoolly D那得到靈感，發展西岸的Gangsta Rap，而N.W.A.讓Gangsta Rap變得更具威脅性。

最後，關於Gangsta Rap這個名詞，其實最早是來自於一個白人Robert Hilburn於1989年LA Times的一篇文章《Ice Cube Keeps Cool . . . Chills Clash》的其中一段：

The concert, meanwhile, continued without further incident. Ice-T, who helped popularize the L.A. "gangster rap" image, was the evening’s headliner and he is a more polished performer and writer than the members of N.W.A.

但是，Dr. Dre在1993年接受Rolling Stone訪問時表示對"gangsta rap"用字的反感，且抱怨媒體對他的音樂所貼的標籤。

If I’m promoting violence, they’re promoting it just as much as I am by focusing on it in the article,” he said. “That really bugs me out — you know, if it weren’t going on, I couldn’t talk about it. And who came up with that term gangsta rap anyway?
