Q-Tip和Phife在A Tribe Called Quest成立之前就已經認識，兩人從小在紐約皇后區一起長大。早年，Q-Tip以MC Love Child的藝名在各處表演，並找了Ali Shaheed Muhammad兼任DJ，Phife那個時候經常與他們合作演出，直到Jarobi加入後（發行第一張專輯後就離團），團隊正式成立，但一開始的名稱不是A Tribe Called Quest，而是Crush Connection。

「A Tribe Called Quest」這個團名源自於Q-Tip在1988年Jungle Brothers的〈The Promo〉中唱到：「from A Tribe Called Quest」。雖然這是Q-Tip第一次在別人的唱片客串，但Q-Tip的表現充滿自信，在Hip Hop正要邁入Golden Age的時候展露頭角。

A Tribe Called Quest的音樂常取樣了爵士樂的旋律和爵士的鼓聲，整體氣氛輕鬆慵懶，很適合在午後的咖啡廳播放。此外，Q Tip和Phife Dawg的聲音剛好一高一低、一柔一剛，經常透過出其不意的對唱，為歌曲增添不少變化。他們的前三專輯《People’s Instinctive Travels and Rhythm (1990)》、《The Low End Theory (1991)》和《Midnight Marauders (1993)》不僅獲得了大眾的喜愛，更奠定了Jazz Hip Hop的基礎。

然而，隨著第四張專輯《Beats, Rhymes And Life (1996)》的發行，團體內部開始出現裂痕。當時，皈依伊斯蘭教的Q-Tip更常與其他藝術家合作，這對A Tribe Called Quest團員之間的關係產生了極大的影響。而且，那時候Phife Dawg已經移居亞特蘭大，常常必須飛到紐約錄音室與團員進行創作，但到場的時候Q-Tip跟Ali早已離開，也沒先知會一聲，讓他非常不滿。

另一方面，Q-Tip和Phife的性格總是形成鮮明對比，前者是一位雄心勃勃的完美主義者，後者同樣很有才華，但有時非常固執且難以相處。隨著兩人之間的距離越來越大，於是在1998年第五張專輯《The Love Movement》發行前一個月，A Tribe Called Quest宣布解散。

解散之後，A Tribe Called Quest各成員都在自己的領域裡努力，其中Q-Tip表現最為出色，《Amplified (1999)》、《Kamaal the Abstract (2002)》以及《The Renaissance (2008)》這三張個人專輯均獲得好評。

Ali Shaheed則與Raphael Saadiq（Tony! Toni! Toné!）和Dawn Robinson（En Vogue）組成R&B天團Lucy Pearl，雖然僅成立三年就解散，但在2000年發行唯一一張與團體同名的專輯《Lucy Pearl》，主打歌〈Dance Tonight〉獲得了Billboard Hot 100前40名、Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs第五名和第43屆葛萊美獎的Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group。

Phife Dawg因為糖尿病惡化，健康受到影響，所以相較另外兩人比較低調。不過，還是在2000年發行了第一張也是唯一一張的個人專輯《Ventilation：Da LP》，在歌曲中他毫不猶豫地抨擊積極走向主流的Q Tip，並指責Jive Records撕裂了A Tribe Called Quest。

直到2006年，A Tribe Called Quest的四位成員再次合體，並在美國各處開了好幾場巡迴演場會。2015年11月13日，他們在Jimmy Fallon的節目上宣布，即將回到錄音室，開始準備團體最後一張專輯的錄製，才進行四個月，專輯都還沒完成，悲劇就降臨了。Phife Dawg不幸地死於自19歲以來一直纏身的糖尿病，深深震撼了嘻哈界。

不過，這張A Tribe Called Quest的告別專輯並沒有因此胎死腹中，其他團員還是努力地將專輯製作完成。最終，《We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service》在2016年11月問世，獲得各界好評，不僅銷售成績亮眼，還獲得Billboard 200第一名的佳績。

12. We the People (2016)

“All you Black folks, you must go / All you Mexicans, you must go / And all you poor folks, you must go / Muslims and gays / Boy, we hate your ways / So all you bad folks, you must go”

這首歌是A Tribe Called Quest告別專輯《We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service》的首支單曲。由Q-Tip和Blair Wells共同製作，取樣了Black Sabbath〈Beyond of the Wall of Sleep〉這首搖滾樂歌曲的鼓聲。這首歌初次登場於2015年11月23日的「The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon」脫口秀上，整首歌在諷刺當時準備要選總統的川普，抨擊他的種族歧視言論，因此廣泛受反對川普人士的讚譽。

11. 1nce Again (1996)

“This is the year that I come in and just devastate / My style is great ask your peoples can I dominate? / My rhymes are harder than last night’s erection / Don’t play me close, I’ll have this mic up in your rear section…”

〈1nce again〉是A Tribe Called Quest第四張專輯《Beats, Rhymes & Life》的其中一首歌，除了有〈Check the Rhime〉裡頭的經典台詞「You on point, Phife? All the time, Tip」，還取樣了Gary Burton〈I’m Your Pal〉的旋律和Cannonball Adderley 〈Untitled〉開頭的人聲，而副歌優美的女合聲則是由Tammy Lucas所演唱的。

同時，這首歌也是他們1991年經典歌曲〈Check the Rhime〉的續集，其MV就使用〈Check the Rhime〉的旋律來作開頭。

10. Bonita Applebum (1990)

“Hey Bonita, glad to meet ya / For the kind of stunning newness, I must beseech ya / Being with you is a top priority / Ain’t no need to question the authority / Chairman of the board, the chief of affections / You got mine’s to swing in your direction / Hey, you’re like a Hip Hop song, you know? Bonita Applebum, you gotta put me on…”

這首歌頌女性的歌是首發專輯《People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm》的第二首歌，取樣了RAMP的〈Daylight〉、Rotary Connection的〈Memory Band〉和Little Feat的〈Fool Yourself〉。

9. Get A Hold (1996)

“The deadly venom, let me start from the beginning / We always hitting, so yo, there’ll be no extra innings / As I send the mic out the park like Reggie Jackson / You be the minor leaguer who sees no action…”

〈Got A Hold〉是由Hip Hop傳奇製作人J Dilla所製作的，據說J Dilla只在短短12分鐘內就完成了這首鼓。儘管在當時有些人討厭A Tribe Called Quest在第四張專輯的風格變化，但不得不說，這種風格的小鼓聽起來更脆，大鼓也變得更加厚實。

8. Oh My God (1993)

“Listen up everybody, the bottom line / I’m a black intellect, but unrefined / With precision like a bullet, target bound / Just living like a hooker, the harlot sounds / Now when I say the harlot, you know I mean the hot / Heat of the equator, the broth that’s in the pot…”

這是A Tribe Called Quest第三張專輯《Midnight Marauders》中的第三張單曲，取樣了Kool & The Gang的〈Who’s Gonna Take the Weight〉，並找了Busta Rhymes來客串。

7. Can I Kick It (1990)

“Can I kick it? To all the people who can Quest like A Tribe does / Before this, did you really know what live was? / Comprehend to the track, for it’s why cuz / Gettin measures on the tip of the vibers…”

這首在1989年時錄製的，當時他們才19歲而已，年紀輕輕就展現對饒舌和Hip Hop音樂的天份跟才華。由於這首歌取樣Lou Reed的〈Walk on the Wild Side〉，所以他們並未從這首歌獲益。不過，這首歌在2012年獲得了NME 90年代百大歌曲的第90名。

6. Scenario (1991)

“Sit back relax and let yourself go / Don’t sweat what you heard, but act like you know”

這首歌由A Tribe Called Quest的Q Tip和Phife Dawg以及Leaders of the New School的Charlie Brown、Dinco D和Busta Rhymes所演唱，大概是Hip Hop歷史上最有名的posse cuts歌曲之一（由四個或以上的饒舌歌手演唱的歌曲）。當時才19歲的Busta Rhymes在這首歌的表現令人讚嘆，讓他名聲大噪。

5. Award Tour (1993)

“People give your ears so I be sublime / It’s enjoyable to know you and your concubines / Niggas, take off your coats, ladies act like gems / Sit down, Indian style, as we recite these hymns…”

Q Tip表示自己非常喜歡這個來自Sons of Champlin〈You Can Fly〉的鼓聲，並將Jade〈Don’t Walk Away〉的Bassline和Milt Jackson〈Olinga〉、Weldon Irvine〈We Gettin’ Down〉以及Charles Earland 〈Lowdown〉的旋律重新組合成屬於這首歌的節拍。小編不得不說，這首歌的層次真的非常豐富。

4. I Left My Wallet In El Segundo (1990)

“I ordered enchiladas and I ate em / Ali had the fruit punch”

這首歌發表於1990年4月11日，是首張專輯《People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm》第一首發表的歌，其輕鬆愉快的主旋律取樣自The Chambers Brothers的〈Funky〉。

3. Jazz (We’ve Got) (1991)

“Stern firm and young with a laid-back tongue / The aim is to succeed and achieve at 21 / Just like Ringling Brothers, I’ll daze and astound / Captivate the mass, cause the prose was profound / Do it for the strong, we do it for the meek / Boom it in your boom it in your boom it in your Jeep…”

這首歌取樣的片段是由Pete Rock提供，經Q Tip以類似的方式重新製作的。雖然製作人欄沒有掛Pete Rock的名字，但Q Tip藉由「Pete Rock for the beat, ya don’t stop.」這句歌詞，在歌曲中讚揚他。

此外，這首歌的MV以黑白畫面呈現，Q Tip在第二段結尾說了一句「now check it out」後，音樂瞬間暫停，Ali問了一句「Check what out?」，Phife回答「Check this out」。這時畫面瞬間變成彩色，音樂變成同張專輯的〈Buggin’ Out〉。

2. Electric Relaxation (1993)

“Honey, check it out, you got me mesmerized / With your black hair and your fat-ass thighs / Street poetry is my everyday / But yo, I gotta stop when you trot my way”

這首歌是Q Tip在Phife奶奶的地下室製作的，取樣了Ronnie Foster〈Mystic Brew〉開頭的旋律。那個時候Phife剛從外面回來，一聽到地下室傳來的音樂，都還沒跟家人打招呼就馬上衝到地下室查看。另外，這首歌還有一個有趣的地方，他們所唱的歌詞是對方幫忙寫的。

1. Check The Rhime (1991)

“Now here’s a funky introduction of how nice I am / Tell your mother, tell your father, send a telegram”

在這首歌中，Q-Tip和Phife回想起他們還沒成名前，在紐約皇后區的林登大道上用饒舌跟別人交流的日子。主歌和副歌的主旋律分別取樣了Minnie Riperton的〈Baby, This Love I Have〉和Average White Band〈Love Your Life〉，並完美搭配Grover Washington, Jr.〈Hydra〉的經典鼓聲。
